Writing Styles Set the Writing Tone
By · CommentsI was interviewed for a position about content writing not too long ago. They told me that my “writing style” was just what they were looking for. As I put away my portfolio that I had brought to the interview, I started to wonder about my writing style. I sat down with said portfolio and began to slowly look through it. Each piece of work I have has a different writing tone which was dictated based on the writing style called for by a particular client. I pride myself on being able to write for any industry in any style that the client dictates.
Writing Styles
Here is a top 5 list of general writing styles I have seen and/or used:

My First Guest Blog Post
By · CommentsWell, I did it. Never knew I could or would, but I did. I finally wrote a post for another blog: Famous Bloggers. I discovered this blog through a couple different sites: Dennis Edell (Personal Direct Sales Marketing Mentor to the New and Struggling) and My Guest Blog (Community of Guests Bloggers).
Never Knew I Could
Now, I think I’m a very good writer. I’ve been making my living from my writing for more years than I care to mention
I’m good at what I do and enjoy writing. I can write for a lot of different genres and a wide array of industries. Until this opportunity presented itself, I never thought I could write for another blog that was not “mine” in some way.

Technical Writers as Linchpins: Are You Indispensable?
By · CommentsI discovered Ivan Walsh on LinkedIn. After following some of his comments, I realized he was really good at what he did. I’ve been writing for a long time and agreed with most of what he writes about not only in the forums, but on his blog as well. Well not everyone can be perfect. So I asked him to write a guest post for us and he kindly did. So, read on and find out how you can make yourself indispensable!
Are You Indispensable?
Seth Godin in his latest book introduces the concept of a linchpin, someone in a company who is indispensable, who cannot be replaced, who is too unique and valuable to be let go.
For technical writers, this raises some interesting questions:
What can I do to make myself indispensable?
What tools must I learn so that I cannot be replaced?
Who will recognize this and see the value of my efforts.
Video Killed the Online Technical Writing Star
By · CommentsHEADLINE: Video killed technical writing aka “Video killed the Radio Star.” Well, not really, I mean we still have our favorite singers and we still find them mostly through some sort of radio station, be it local, or satellite, or streaming Internet.

The same goes with text and blogging sites. I follow a few bloggers religiously and one day I stumbled across post about using Google to find keywords. Now this post starts out innocently enough with text, but then ends up in a video to explain the meat and potatoes.
I have nothing against videos so don’t get me wrong, however, on this particular day I was reading through the blogs I follow in a Panera Bread on a laptop that has a sound card that doesn’t work. So as you can imagine, the video was a show stopper for me.
Page Landing – Cleared for Landing Page Design
By · CommentsPage Landing, sounds kind of corny huh? Back in the day, like last year, one page sales pitches were known as Landing Pages, Stealth Sites (or Stealth web sites) and now today some people refer to them as Squeeze Pages.

What Are Page Landings (aka Squeeze Pages)?
So, now that you are up to date on the terminology, what is IT? A Landing Page by any other name is quite simply a one page ad. It shouldn’t be overly long, have a simple message (like what you’re offering), and a sign up box to capture an email address and/or a phone number. IMPORTANT: Landing Pages DO NOT link off to any site or company. They are a one page standalone “site”.
A Blog is NOT A Website
By · CommentsWhen is a blog not a website? A blog is not a website, never has been, never will be.
Debate has been raging for quite sometime about blogs being used as websites and that there is nothing wrong with it. And as a website and blog designer I could not disagree more. Websites have a particular purpose in life while blogs have quite another purpose in life. It’s like saying which is better, the apple or the orange. They each have their pros and cons. So let’s take a look shall we.
Anatomy of a Website
- Provide a constant credible web presence

- Provide Up-to-Date information about a company, their products and services
- Need to be designed by someone who knows HTML
- Can be static, animated or interactive
- Informs followers of updates
- Has a place to leave comments
- Has a way to contact the owners
